Assuring Zone IAQ.

Today's building environment is a scary place. Existing and revised Standards are shaping both building designs and legal environments. Poor product selection has been the subject of at least one lawsuit, and has the potential to be a major influence in future design decisions. Individual interpretations of Standards are implicit in many design strategies, which can change as Standards are revised, adopted by code bodies and official interpretations are published. This article discusses options to solve these complex and often conflicting issues, while assuring comfort and indoor air quality. Excerpted from Contracting Business by the authors, 1998.

Air Distribution for Comfort and IAQ

Modern environmentally controlled spaces consume significant amounts of energy in maintaining a stable environment within the structure. The demands for heating and cooling vary greatly over time, and different strategies are employed to respond to these varying loads. Ventilation requirements must also be met by the HVAC system. This conditioned and ventilated air must be effectively delivered to the building occupants. This article discusses options.

Air Distribution for Large Spaces

The distribution of air into large spaces has both good news and bad news. The good news is that since the spaces are so large, air distribution is spread out over a large area and localized problems are unlikely. The bad news is that because the spaces are large, diffusers can't be located everywhere. Most of the selection process is one of experience and jet mapping. The standard commercial office axioms of ADPI and diffuser throw vs. spacing are not applicable. Rather, jet projections are analyzed and diffusers selected accordingly.
